Taxi driver licence in Finland

Here is how you become a taxi driver in Finland. The requirements, the exam and the application process — and we get you ready for the exam, also if Finnish is not your first language.

Can you apply for the licence?

To get a taxi driver licence you must meet these requirements:

B-class driving licence — held for at least one year, issued in Finland, the EU or the EEA
No driving ban — you must not have a driving ban in force
Health requirements — you meet the group 2 medical requirements
Background check — the applicant's criminal and fines record is checked
Taxi driver exam — passed

Licence validity: five years at a time, or two years if you are over 68. The licence must be renewed when it expires.

The taxi driver exam

The exam has 50 multiple-choice questions and lasts a maximum of 45 minutes. It is taken at an Ajovarma service point in Finnish or Swedish — no dictionary or interpreter may be used.

How to apply for the licence

1. Prepare and take the exam — at an Ajovarma service point
2. Submit the application — at an Ajovarma service point; the licence is issued by Traficom
3. Attachments — a medical certificate no more than 6 months old, and a photo if you do not have a valid passport or ID card
4. Processing — about three weeks

Only the A+ price is ours. The exam and the licence are paid to Ajovarma, the medical certificate to the clinic — you pay those directly to them. Medical certificate prices vary between clinics.
